Abstract
The aspect of core pathology of personality disorders (PD) likely generating the most
disruptive consequences are maladaptive schemas for self and others. Patients are
driven by rigid and dysfunctional constructions of the self and of how others would
react to their wishes in the relational domains. I contend here that awareness of such
those schemas is a mandatory treatment goal in any treatment for PD. I will briefly
summarize how the therapies described by the authors in this special issue on treatment
for PD deal with such a treatment goal.
