Abstract

Studies of the outcome of cognitive-behavioral treatment of clients diagnosed with personality disorders are few and need further replication. This case study examines how Beck's and Young's schema-focused approach offers a helpful framework to use with an Avoidant Personality Disorder (APD) client. The findings point to the value of cognitive/behavioral strategies in restructuring Early Maladaptive Schema, historically associated with APD, and in modifying many of the behavior patterns characteristic of APD.
